Vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Globalisierung hat sich das Spektrum der in Wien gesprochenen Sprachen erweitert. Mehrsprachigkeit wird zwar als symbolisches und soziales Kapital wertgeschätzt, Deutschkenntnisse gelten jedoch nach wie vor als vorrangiger Gradmesser gesellschaftlicher Integration – allerdings nur bei Migrant:innen bestimmter Muttersprachen. Um die aktuelle Sprachpolitik besser verstehen zu können, wird im Symposium eine Geschichte der Mehrsprachigkeit in Wien entlang von historischen Konfliktlinien nachvollzogen.

Die Initiative Minderheiten hat in Kooperation mit dem Forschungszentrum für historische Minderheiten, dem Arbeitskreis Archiv der Migration, dem lernraum.wien – VHS Wien, der AK Wien, BUM MEDIA und dem Österreichischen Museum für Volkskunde das Symposium »Mehrsprachigkeit in Wien historisch betrachtet« initiiert.
